Professor Frieder Seible

Professor Frieder Seible commenced in April 2013 as the new Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University.

He succeeds Professor Ron Weber who has been appointed as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash South Africa.

Prior to his appointment, Professor Seible held the roles of Dean, Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering, University of California; Distinguished Professor, Department of Structural Engineering; Eric and Johanna Reissner Chair of Applied Mechanics and Structural Engineering; and Walter J Zable Professor. He is an Elected Fellow of the US Academy of Engineering and a Foreign Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Professor Seible brings to Monash an impressive record of fundraising, industry engagement, and international experience, with a particular focus on China.

During his tenure as Dean of Engineering at UCSD, Prof. Seible was the Chair of the Executive Committee for the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and the Chair of the Governing Board of the California Institute of Telecommunication and Information Technology (Calit2). Professor Seible's expertise is in the analysis and modelling of structures and their behavior simulation in extreme events such as earthquakes and bomb blasts. His research achievements include over 600 publications and technical reports.

Professor Seible has also been appointed as an Academic Vice-President at Monash who will be responsible for a range of external and international engagement initiatives.
