Grants

STCRC Grant - 2005 An Abstracted Ontology and Application Generator for Web-Based Tourism Systems and Services

Collaboration between Victoria University, University of Technology Sydney and Monash University. The Team includes: Nalin Sharda, Michael McGrath and Margaret Deery (VU); John Debenham (UTS); Susan Foster and Graeme Shanks (MU). This project will employ powerful modern data and process modelling approaches to specify key tourism concepts at an abstracted level, resulting in an 'ontology' which may be used to generate tourism planning systems for different domains.

Funding: $80,000 (STCRC)

STCRC Grant - 2005 Developing and Evaluating Location Based Services (LBS) - CRC Sustainable Tourism With: Pramod Sharma (University of Queensland), Paul Hawking, Andrew Stein, (Victoria University), Susan Foster, (Monash University) This project will investigate the commercial applicability of Location Based Services in the Australian tourism industry. The focus will be on the infrastructure - both physical as well as content - required to support these services. The project will develop three specific applications (intelligent GPS based commentary system, technology for event management, recommender systems for LBS ) on different scales, for different stakeholders and within different business environments. The scopes of these three applications will be a critical guide on the use of LBS applications in the wider tourism industry. It is intended to use the next Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006 as a test bed.

Funding: $80,000 (CRC Sustainable Tourism)

2005- Information Systems & E-Business (ISMEB) Research Group Grant IS security: Are we doing enough to educate our students?

This project will investigate the contribution to IS security by the Australian tertiary sector and will assess the skills sought by Australian organisations and recruitment bodies and the linkage between these three areas. Many Australian organisations are required to comply with security initiatives due to legislations such as the Sarbanes Oxley Act. As well business initiatives such as e-commerce supported by the Australian Government are providing the impetus for small to medium size enterprises to manage the security of their systems. In this business context, IS security is not currently being adequately addressed at the education level. This project should lead into the recognition of IS Security in an educational environment and the necessary skills.

Funding: $5,900

STCRC Grant - 2004 Benchmarking Location Based Services (LBS) - CRC Sustainable Tourism Collaboration between University of Queensland, Victoria University and Monash University: Team includes: Pramod Sharma (UQ), Linda Dawson and Susan Foster (MU), Paul Hawking, Andrew Stein and John Zeleznikow (VU). This project is a scoping study which will explore the current state-of-the-art in LBS in the Australian tourism industry. The aim is to identify key players, current trends and key areas for development which will provide the foundations for future projects in mobility, LBS and sustainable tourism.

Funding: $40,000 (CRC Sustainable Tourism) ____________________________________________________________________________ Monash Research Fund - 2004 Social computing and complexity Human-centred design and deployment of ICT in large organisations.
