Yen Cheung graduated top of her class with an honours degree in Data Processing from Loughborough University of Technology in 1986 and completed her doctorate in Engineering at Warwick University. Funded by the Science and Engineering Research Council in the UK, her research was concerned with the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to process planning. She developed an intelligent process planner using Edinburgh Prolog based on AI planning techniques and examples from the assembly of automotive gearboxes.
Following two years of full-time research, Dr Cheung worked initially as a Teaching Fellow and then as a Senior Teaching Fellow at the Warwick Manufacturing Group, University of Warwick. She was responsible for the AI and Information Technology (IT) courses in the MSc programs in Engineering Business Management. She also ran IT courses for major companies in UK and Malaysia, the latter based upon the University Technology Malaysia. From 1988 a large number of academic and industrial projects was supervised, mainly in the areas of applied IT and AI in manufacturing.
After moving to Australia in 1994, Yen joined the School of Business Systems at Monash University. From 1995 to1997, she developed and taught subjects (units) in Management Information Systems for the MBA program at the Business School and Database Management Systems for the School of Business Systems. In 1995, she developed the unit, Business Case Development, following a request from the co-operative education sponsors of the school. This unit is now a core unit of the undergraduate program at the school as well as a postgraduate unit starting in 1999. Other teaching responsibilities, for the postgraduate students of the school, include the core unit, Business Systems A, which is concerned with the fundamentals of computer programming.
Yen's current research interests are in the areas of Business IT management and intelligent business systems. Specific topics of Business IT are business process re-engineering, change management issues, concepts and the business case development methodology. In the area of intelligent business systems, her particular interests are in the design, development and application of intelligent algorithms for business.
