Credit policy
Background
Current version approved at Faculty Board 3/09.
Parent or related policies
This policy should be read in conjunction with the Faculty Policy - Recognition of Prior Learning.
The Faculty of Information Technology adheres to the Monash University policies on Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Policy
Programs offered by Australian and overseas institutions may be assessed for credit towards courses in the Faculty of Information Technology.
The assessment of credit must be consistent across courses within the Faculty (subject to course progression and structure) and must be granted on academic grounds alone.
Monash University Policy on Credit
The Faculty of Information Technology adheres to the Monash University policies on Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
The following principles of University Policy and Procedures should be noted:
- To be eligible for credit, previous study must have been completed within ten years prior to the year of application of credit. Exceptions may be made with the approval of the Dean or nominee.
- Credit transfer is assessed on the basis of equivalence of learning content in terms of the curriculum, depth of study and credit point value of the previous unit of learning. For specified credit to be granted, a unit or units of previous study must be equivalent to at least 80% of the curriculum and credit point value of a Monash University unit.
- Unspecified credit (free electives) may be granted where there is not an exact unit equivalence.
- Exemptions may be granted when the content of a core unit is covered in previous study and the Course Director recommends that the applicant replace it with an alternative unit of the same point value.
- Students who are granted credit shall not be rquired to avail themselves of it, but should notify the Faculty accordingly. Students may also request in writing to have previously appoved credit removed or revoked at a later stage to suit their enrolment.
- When granting credit the Faculty will advise the student of the specific requirements for the completion of the course and the remaining duration of the student's course.
- Eligibility for credit towards a course does not guarantee admission to the course.
Faculty of Information Technology Policy on Credit
Specific to the Faculty of Information Technology are the following principles:
- The deadline for submission of applications for credit assessments is no later than 2 weeks from the commencement of semester. After this period, the Course Directors reserve the right to refuse late requests for assessment of credit where they feel that the student’s academic progress in the course is compromised.
- When assessing studies for credit transfer, the objective is to grant the maximum level of credit in accordance to the course structure requirements. In the first instance, credit assessment will focus on the granting of specified units. Unspecified credit (free electives) may be granted where there is less than 80% unit equivalence.
- Subsequent applications for additional credit transfer will only be accepted by the Faculty where there is evidence of previously completed studies which were not considered in the initial credit transfer application. In such instances, any previously granted credit will be re-assessed.
- The Faculty reserves the right to remove or revoke credit it has granted where the Faculty decides it is necessary for the student’s academic progress in course.
- Credit will not be recognised for a Near Pass (NP) grade or terminating pass, with the exception of FIT students transferring internally at the Course Director’s discretion.
- Monash College study may be approved as Complementary Studies if it aids student course progression and has the approval of the Associate Dean (Education). Such requests will be considered on a case by case basis.
- Credit will not be awarded for TAFE Certificate IV study. However, at the Course Director’s discretion, a combination of Certificate IV study and relevant industry experience may be considered for Recognition of Prior Learning.
- Course Directors reserve the right to review and re-assess all previously granted credit when students apply to transfer within the Faculty.
- Credit for concurrent learning will not be considered without prior approval being obtained prior to the commencement of the study to which the credit will be applied.
- Credit for postgraduate specialisations may be approved by Course Directors to a maximum of 50% of the specialisation.
The following credit limits will apply whether the qualification is incomplete or has been conferred. For all postgraduate awards not more than 48 credit points, or not less than half the course (whichever is less) will apply. With the exception of formal credit assessments and agreements approved by Faculty Board, the following credit limits will apply:
• 144 point undergraduate degree – maximum of 96 points credit.
• 192 point undergraduate degree – maximum of 144 points credit.
• 72 point masters degree – maximum of 36 points credit.
• 96 point masters degree – maximum of 48 points credit.
• 48 point graduate diploma – maximum of 24 points credit.
• 24 point graduate certificate or postgraduate certificate – maximum of 12 points credit.
Institutional Credit Assessments
The Faculty’s institutional credit assessments will be published on the Faculty’s credit database. The institutional assessments will be reviewed every three years. The institution’s program documentation will be held centrally by Student Services for reference by the Faculty Education Committee or if required for subsequent credit assessment for other Faculty courses.
Establishing Credit Arrangements with Private Providers
The Dean, Associate Dean Education, and the Faculty Academic Manager will make initial assessments on any proposals that come to the Faculty. Proposals with merit will be referred to the Undergraduate Programs Committee or Postgraduate Programs Committee for further consideration.
ESOS Act - Compliance Relating to Credit (Effective from 1 July 2007)
Where credit is approved before a visa is granted, the Faculty must indicate the actual course duration in the letter of credit issued to that student for that course.
If credit leads to a reduced study load (such as a reduction in contact hours per week) the Faculty can approve a reduced study load in accordance with ESOS policy.
